Learning
Brazilian Portuguese |
|
If you want to learn Brazilian
Portuguese, there are numerous professional language schools, universities,
audio tape courses, books and software programs available. Many of the
larger metropolitan areas will even have private teachers or tutors available.
The problem is that everyone learns language differently and what works
for one person might not work for you. Generally, adults learn by eye (by
reading and absorbing information) and only secondarily by hearing the
language. Children are usually just the opposite.
Enrolling in a course at
a language school can often cost a small fortune—especially if it's an
"immersion" course—and there are no guarantees. Many universities only
offer "Portuguese" courses during the day, and usually only the largest
metropolitan areas have private teachers or tutors available. All of these
options can be costly and/or inconvenient.
Most audio tape courses rely
upon you absorbing the language through constant (and we mean constant)
repetition. Many course books provide fundamental grammar and instruction
but they don't help much with pronunciation. Many software courses provide
only basic instruction and, while they may offer some pronunciation help,
only the basics are covered.
