While computers are wonderful for dealing with numbers (numbers remain unchanged from one idiom to another), human language is much, much more complex. Even before the advent of PDAs, numerous handheld, calculator like devices were readily available on the market to translate numerous different languages including Brazilian Portuguese. Any of them ever produced were little more than expensive electronic toys. Whether then or now, handheld translation devices and software programs designed for them only offer quick, literal translations of individual words or short phrases—essentially, the same thing that you could obtain by carrying a small, cheap, pocket sized, printed translation dictionary.

Because of the very nature of PDAs and other such handheld devices, almost any Brazilian Portuguese translation programs you may see advertised on the market that are specifically designed for use on PDAs or other handheld devices, cannot and do not use machine translation technology and only produce quick, literal translations of individual words and short phrases. Since they may cost anywhere from $50 to $300+, save yourself some money and buy a small, pocket sized, printed translation dictionary for around $10. While these large stores do carry some language software products for Spanish, French, German and often Italian—as well as multi-language software products—they prefer not to stock Brazilian Portuguese software products such as Delta Translator because, quite simply, they are not as "popular" and/or requested as these large stores' marketing and sales objectives and, distribution systems both require and demand.

Brazilians use a virtual plethora of common, everyday words that are not used in Portugal at all, and the reverse is also true. That's why, if you are trying to communicate with a Brazilian, it's important to use a translation program like Delta Translator which uses 100% Brazilian Portuguese, not a mishmash of "Portuguese" that presupposes that the language is the same everywhere in the world. We refer to "Brazilian Portuguese" but, in Brazil itself, you will only hear it referred to as "Portuguese".

Another translation software publisher would have you believe that the Portuguese spoken in Portugal "differs somewhat from the Portuguese spoken in Brazil ... [although] the differences are not major." They continue to tell you that "the Portuguese language is [spoken by] about 170 million people, mostly in Portugal and the Portuguese islands" and that "in Brazil, around 154 million people speak [Portuguese]" and that "[their] translation software uses Brazilian Portuguese." Of course, while they tell you this, they embellish their advertisement with the flag of Portugal! What?! But they have their numbers wrong! In reality, there are over 210 million Portuguese speaking people in the world and, of these, 184 million are Brazilian.

We're not trying to tell you that two people speaking Portuguese (for example, one from Portugal and other from Brazil) couldn't understand one another when speaking face to face but, with written communication, things are often very different. In this case, George Bernard Shaw's famous quote “England and America are two countries divided by a common language” comes to mind. It is very much the same with the Brazilians and Portuguese in Portugal, with the exception that the divisions are often even more profound.

Many translation software publishers who offer a myriad of different languages, including "Portuguese", use essentially the same program engine for every language. The only thing that changes is the translation database, a critical component of any translation system. Some of these publishers are based in such places as Russia and Eastern Europe. In many cases, the Portuguese translation databases they use were created by non Portuguese speaking people contracted to simply copy raw translation data from printed sources which may or may not be correct. While many such translation databases are capable of producing literal translations for some things, they often falter when attempting to provide true translations.

For example, one "Portuguese" translation program on the market translates the very commonly used Brazilian greeting bom dia as "good day". As a literal translation, "good day" is not completely wrong but it is not the most common translation "good morning". If you take just this one small example and multiply it by all the words and phrases used in the entire Portuguese language in Brazil, you'll begin to understand the basis of the problem: translation program engines not specifically created for Portuguese that use translation databases created by people who don't know a word of Portuguese much less the correct translation. There's little wonder you were disappointed.
